When the type-key is released to permit the return of the type-bar to normal position, the universal bar is lifted by a spring 36 and the 7 dogs are returned to normal position, thereby permitting a feeding movement of the carriage.
The ordinary shift-key of the machine is designated 37 and is mounted upon a lever 38, pivoted at 39 between a pair of ears 40, supported at the left of the machine upon an inwardly-extending bracket 41, which is socured by a screw 42 to the side wall of the base. This lever 38 is connected by a strap 43 and link 44 to a pivot 45, which is so mounted upon the left-hand rocker-arm 46 of the platen-shifting frame that a depression of the lever 38 pulls said pivot 45 downwardly and rocks the shifting-frame rearwa rdly, thus shifting the platen-frame to the position for printing capital letters or to upper-case position.
On the right-hand side of the machine is provided an auxiliary shift-key 47, mounted upon a lever 48, pivotally supported at 49 upon a bracket 50, secured to the right-hand side wall of the base by a screw 51. This lever is connected by a link 52 to an extension 53,formed upon the right-hand rocker-arm 21.
Since all of the parts hereinabove mentioned excepting the platen-frame hinge are in common use upon the Remington No. 6 type-writing machine, it is not deemed essential to describe them more fully.
Just over the key-levers and substantially in the vertical plane of the universal bar 35 I mount a transverse horizontal rock-shaft 54. Near the right-hand end thereof I mount an upwardly-extending catch, which is preferably composed of two parts 55 and 56, the latter being the shorter of the two and being pivoted at 57 to the lower main arm 55. These two parts are connected by a spring 58,which is attached by a screw 59 to the arm 55 and secured at 60 to the part 56, thereby holding when the catches are rocked upon the shaft 54 the downward movement of said frame,
and hence the printing movements of the type-key levers and type-bars, is blocked or prevented. The arm 55 is connected by a forwardly extending link 62 with the lower end of an arm 63, which is attached to and extends downwardly from the right-hand operating-arm 53 of the platen-shifting frame, so that whenever said frame is vibrated the arm 55 is swung forwardly, the rock-shaft 54 is rocked, and the other arm 61 is also swung forwardly, both of the catch portions passing just beneath the branches 33.
In operation when the shift-key 37 is depressed the lever 38 is swung downwardly about-its pivot 39 and through the link 44 and pivot 45 swings the entire shifting-frame 20 21 22 46, and thereby pushes the platenframe rearwardly upon its hinge, so that the rear or capital letter upon the type carried at the end of the bar 4 may make an impression. During this movement the catches tem porarily occupy positions directly beneath thebranches 33 of the dog-rocker frame, as illustrated at Fig. 3, thereby preventing the normal or full operation of the dog-rocker, universal bar, keylevers, and types, so that no printing can occur while the platen is in a midway position. The catches are swung far enough to escape the branches 33, so that the dog-rocker, and hence the keys and types, may be operated in the usual manner. Upon releasing the shiftkey from pressure the parts are returned to normal positions by means of the usual spring 64, and during said return the catches pass again beneath the branches 33, so as to prevent premature operation thereof. Thus it will be seen that a type im ression cannot be made during either the forward or backward shifting movements of the platen, so that it becomes impossible for a double or blurred impression to be made or for the capital types to appear out of alinement with the lower-case types. Thus no matter how high the speed of operation or how poorly timed are the successive operations of the shift-key and the type-keys still it is not possible for the operator to produce the faulty work hereinbefore referred to. Should the shift-key at any time be operated when a type-key is partly or fully depressed, and hence when the branches of the dogrocker 33 are in a depressed position, the pivoted and spring-controlled fingers 56 upon striking the said branches will yield, so that no injury can be done either to the dogrocker or to the catches and also so that the shifting movement of the platen-frame may be effected.
The pivot 45, above referred to, is mounted, as usual, upon a lever 65, which is pivoted at 66 to a depending portion 67 of the rockerarm 46 of the shifting-frame. Pivoted at 68 to another depending portion 69 thereof is a handle or lever 70, having an arm 71, which has a finger 72, working in a slot 73, formed in said lever 65. arm 74, to which is connected the upper end of said spring 64, the latter at'its lower end being caught into a screw-eye 75, tapped into a portion of the framework. The parts are so constructed and timed that the catches or stops, which normally remain out of operative relation to thedog-rocker, so as to permit the operation of the character-keys for printing purposes in one ,case, come into an intercepting position relatively to said dog-rocker immediately the shift-key is started and hold said rocker and its as' sociated parts against movement until the completion of the shifting operation, and hence the operator is prevented from printing a type of the other case until the platen has been shifted sufficiently to insure the striking of such type in alinement with the other types previously impressed or subse-- quently to be printed in the same line, and it will also be observed that on release of the shift-key the stops or catches again coact withthe dog-rocker to prevent printing of a type before the shifting mechanism has been fully restored to its normal position andthe platen likewise brought back to its normal position. Thus neither during the shifting nor returning movements of the platen can a type be printed out of line or be printed between lines either in whole or in part.

Said screw is provided at its inner end with a 'cylindroconical point 82, which is seated in a pivothole 83, formed in a lug 84, cast upon the platen-frame- The screw may beadjusted longitudinally, so as to move the platenframe endwise relatively to the truck 16,
whereby thetype impressions are enabled to register exactly with the platen-scale usually placed upon saidplaten-frame. Said screws may also be adjusted so as to take up wear and prevent endwise shake of the platenframe, and at the same time said screws permit a free pivotal movement of said platenframe, which is a great desideratum in this class of machines, because it is important that the parts move freely under the action of the shift-key, so as not to fatigue the operator, and it is also important that the parts move accurately or without endshake and skewing in order to produce alined and evenly-spaced work. The outer portion of the screw-point 82 is cylindrical, while the inner portion (designated as 82*) is conical. The cylindrical shape of the screw-points insures that thejoint will wear a long time, while. the conical portion enables the wear to be taken up. A binding-nut 86 is provided for said screw and bears against the inner face of the arm 76.
Numerous changes in details of construction and arrangement may be made within the scope of my invention in adapting the same to various styles of machines,-andparts' of the invention may be used without others.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a series of types, a platen, letterfeeding devices including a dog-rocker having branches, a universal bar suspended upon said branches, key-levers connected to said types and constructed to operate said universal bar, a rock-shaft, a pair of normally inactive catches upon said rock-shaft, and adapted to block the movement of said dog-rocker, and means connected to said rock-shaft for shifting said platen.
11. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a series of types, a series of keylevers connected thereto, a platen-carriage, escapement devices for said carriage controlled by said keys, rock-shaft 54, catches thereon, link 62, and a platen-shifting frame to which said link is connected.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a series of types, a platen, a caseshift mechanism, a yielding finger connected to said case-shift mechanism and arranged out of the path of a part which moves in unison with the types, and means for causing said finger to intercept said part during the operation of the case-shift mechanism.
14. In a type-writing machine, a catch connected to and moving with a case-shifting mechanism and comprising two parts, one yieldingly pivoted upon the other and occupying a normal position just out of the path of a part which moves in unison with typeimpressing devices.
15. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a series of types, a platen, a carriage, escapement devices, including a dogrocker, and a platen-shifting mechanism, of
rock-shaft 5 4, arms 55 and 61 thereon, yielding fingers 56 carried by said arms and adapted to get into the path of said dog-rocker, and links .62 connecting one of said arms to the case-shift mechanism.
16. In a case shifting and key-blocking mechanism, the combination of rock-shaft 54:, arms 55 and 61 thereon, fingers 56 pivoted on said arms, springs 58, and means connected to the case-shift mechanism for rocking said shaft.
17. In a type-writing machine, a papercarriage comprising a truck, rocker arms thereon, a platen-frame, pivots whereby said platen frame is hinged upon said rockerarms, and means for moving said pivots so as to adjust said platen-frame longitudinally of said truck.
18. In a type-writing machine, the combination, in a paper-carriage, of a truck, rockerarms hinged upon the truck, and a platenframe hinged upon said rocker-arms by means of endwise-adjustable screw-points.
19. In a type-writing machine, the combination in a paper-carriage, of a truck, rockerarms hinged upon the truck, a platen-frame hinged upon said rocker-arms by means of endwise-adjnstable screw-points, and binding-nuts for said screws.
20. In a type-writer paper-carriage, the combination of truck 16, rocker-arms 76, shaft 78 connecting said rocker-arms, screws 79 tapped into said rockerarms and having bearing-points, and a platen-frame arranged between and hinged upon said points.
