' A. G. F. KUROWSKi TYPEWRITING MACHINE Patented Apr. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
ALFRED G. F. KUROWSKI, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO UNIDERWOOD TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE TYPEWRITING MACHINE.
Application filed April 30,
in Brooklyn Borough, in the county Of" Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new' and useful Improve ments in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
1 ing machines, and, more particularly, to means for preventing printing a ainst the platen while the latter is being s ifted between lower and upper-case positions, so thatv a sluggish movement of the shifting mechanism, or a premature operation of a typekey may not result in the production of an impression which is out of alignment or blurred.
It is a feature of this invention to provide a simple-and efficient means for accomplishing the above objectwith a minimum change in the construction of a standard typewrit ing machine. For this purpose, means are provided for preventing actuation of the universal bar while the shifting operation is in progress, thus arresting the type-bars V before the types can print against the platen. Other features and advantages will here inafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an Underwood standard typewriting machine, with the invention applied thereto, the laten being shown in upper-case position, an only the necessary co-operating parts of the machine being shown.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, with additional parts of the machine'ineluded, but showing the platen in lowercase position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail, showing the inv'ention and a few co-operating parts of the machine.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figures 1 and 2, but showing the platen in anintermediate position, between upper and lowercase positions. 5
In the Underwood standard typewriting machine,key-levers 10 actuate bell-cranks 11 to swing type-bars 12 upwardly and rearwardly. against a platen 13, said type-bars.
carrying types Hand 15 for printing in upper and lower case. Said type-bars are. each provided with a shoulder 16 for striking against a universal bar 17, near the end 1921, Serial No. 465,894.
of a stroke, to operate the. escapement-actw ating frame 18 ,pivoted at the rear on arms 19;;and 20, fixed to a shaft 21 journaled in the escapement-supporting frame 22. A rear bar 23 of the cscapcment-actuating frame strikes against a fixed dog 25, and rotates a shaft 29, upon which said dog is mounted, to release a movable dog 26, also The present invention relates to typewritmounted upon said shaft 29, from escapement-wheel 27, so that, upon return of a type-bar, the carriage 30, in which the platen is mounted, will be fed to the left a distance of one letter-space by means of a pinion 31 meshing with a rack 32 on the carriage.
The-platen is journaled in a platen-frame 35, which is held by arms 36, pivotally mounted at 37 on the vmain carriage,-fran'ie 30. For shifting the platemframe and platen, the former is provided with a roller 38, operating on a rail 39 fixed to a swingable frame 40 pivoted at 41, said frame being operable by a finger 42 extending upwardly on a key-lever 43, similar to keylevers 10, and provided at its forward end with the usual shift-key 44. v
The present invention provides means for preventing actuation of the universal bar, and hence printin of the types against the platen while the p aten is shifting from one case to another. For this purpose, there is provided an arcuate member 50 at the end of an arm 51, pivoted on a; bracket 52, fixed to the escapement-supporting frame 22, and an arm 53, fixed to shift rail 39, and having a pin-and-slot connectionfi with arm 51; so that, upon shifting the rail, arm 51, and hence member 50, willhe raised, the arcuate member operating direc'tlybehind the bar 23 of the frame 18, to prevent rearward movement of the frame, and hence of the universalobarl'l, Since the type-bars cannot 0 eratesuflicicntly near the platen to enable t e types to print thereagainst, without moving the universal bar rearwardly, it will 199 be apparent that. by preventing such rearward movement of the universal bar, the
types will be unable to print. The arcuate member 50 ei5tends upwardly from" arm'51 a distance such "that, when shift-rail 39 is in its lowest position, the escapemen't-actuating frame 18 may movefreely over the end thereof, as in Figures 2 and While shift-rail 39 is shifting, however, the mem ber 50 ,prevents any rearward movement of 119 frame 18 (see Figure 4), the arcuate member being directly behind Bar 23. When Shifts rail 39 has reached its highest position, the
frame 18 is again free to move rearwardly? such movement being perimtted by a. cut-qut portion 55 in arcuate member 50, (see Figure 1). From the above description, it will be apparent that a type-impression cannotbe made during the operation of shifting the platen,so that it is impossible for a. blurredimpression tobe made or for the printed -characters to appear out of alignment. 1 i I Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im rovements may be used without others. aving thus described my inventi'omvl claim: I
