Abstract

202,605. Remington Typewriter Co., (Assignees of Seib, G. A.) Aug. 21, 1922, [Convention date]. Type-lever machines; letter-spacing mechanism.-The type-levers are checked before impression by means of a stop-device consisting of a stationary stop arranged out of the path of the type-levers and co-operating with a movable stop which is connected to a member, for instance the universal bail, operated by the type-levers, the stop-device reducing noise and causing the typelevers to return smartly; an anvil may engage the type-levers after they have been checked by the stop-device. As applied to a machine in which the type-levers 22 actuate a universal bail 14 supported by arms 11 on a rock-shaft 8 having a mid-arm 12 connected by a link 7 to the escapement 5, a movable stop-arm 45 of channel-section is secured to the rock-shaft and co-operates with a stop-lug 44 on a stationary bracket 41. The arm 45 is secured by screws 46 to a lug 8<a> on the rock-shaft and is provided with a pad 48 of leather &c. which is doubled over the end of the arm and secured bv a. rivet 47. The bracket 41 is forked and is adjustably secured to a framemember 32 by means of screws 36 passing through slots. After the loose dog of the escapement has been released the stop 44 engages the pad 48 and checks the universal bar and type-lever; thereafter the type-lever moves by momentum, the movement being permitted by the resilience of the stop-device. An anvil, preferably the coiled-wire anvil 49 described in Specification 200,053, may be arranged to engage the type-levers after they have been checked by the stop-device.
