Abstract

298,984. Royal Typewriter Co., Inc., (Assignees of Myers, L. C.). Oct. 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Type-bar actions; case-shift mechanism.-In a sliding type-bar machine, each type-bar is provided with a number of groups of types and is associated with a corresponding number of keylevers, each key-lever being arranged to operate the type-bar, and one or more of the key-levers being arranged to operate also, preferably by means of a yielding connection, a shiftable support for the type-bar. In the action shown in the Figure, the type-bar 1, provided with two pairs a, band c, d of types, is mounted on a rocking support 2 and is operated by either of a pair of key-levers 32, 33. The support is formed with guide-lugs 4 and is provided with a guide plate 6 having guide-lugs 7. The support is guided by a member 64 and has an arm 55 co-operating with adjustable stops 56, 58. The key-levers 32, 33 are connected by links 37, 37<1> to bell-cranks 38. 41 having ears 40, 42 engaging a rock-arm 30 which is connected by a link 29 to a bell-crank 24. The bell-crank is connected by a link 22 to a rock-arm 14 which is connected by a link 10 to the type-bar. The members 14, 24, 30 are mounted on a bracket 16 which can be adjusted by means of a screw 19. The key-lever 33 has a pin 62 engaging a cam 63 on a lever 47 pivoted to a bell-crank 45 which has pin-and-slot engagement 44 with an arm 43 on the support. The movement of the lever 47 is limited by adjustable stops 52, 53, and a spring 50 is arranged between the bell-crank 45 and the lever, the bell-crank and spring forming a yielding connection. When the key-lever 32 is depressed, the support 2 remains at rest and impression is effected from the type c or a as determined by the position of the platen A. When, however, the key-lever 33 is depressed, the support is rocked upwards and impression is effected from the type d or b as determined by the position of the platen. the movement of the support is completed before impression is effected, and thereafter the lever 47 moves idly and the spring 50 yields. A dwell in the cam 63 co-operates with the pin 62 to hold the lever. The support 2, bell-crank 24, and key-levers are provided with returning-springs 60, 27, and 35. When the type-bar is provided with more than two types in a group, the additional key-levers are associated with the above-described yielding connection and a variable shift-stop for the support. The action may be embodied in a poweroperated machine.
