Abstract

360,824. Typewriters &c. ACCOUNTING & TABULATING MACHINE CORPORATION, 374, Broadway, New York, U.S.A. June 5, 1930, No. 17453. Convention date, June 17, 1929. [Class 100 (iv).] Platen-rotation for blanking ; line-spacing mechanism.-The paper-feeding means of a tabulating- machine is associated with a device, additional to the line-spacing mechanism, for automatically imparting blank-feed after the total is printed. The machine shown in the Figure comprises adding- racks 17, type-carriers 18, and hammers having triggers releasable by means of the type-carriers, a locking-bail for the hammers being releasable by means of a pushbutton 40 or the total-control shaft 43. The bail is carried by a shaft 36 having an arm 37 engaging a lever 39 which is rocked by the pushbutton or by an arm 48 on a link 47 connected to the shaft 43. A ratchet wheel 51 on the shaft 50 of the platen 32 co-operates with a line-spacing pawl 52 on a bell crank 53 which is actuated by an adjustable pin 55 on a link 56 and is returned by a spring 54. The link 56 is connected to rocking plates 57, 91, the plate 57 being actuated by a spring 61, and an arm 60 on the main adding-shaft 10. The link 56 is normally disabled by means of a flange 80 which obstructs a rocking arm 84 connected to the plate 57. The flange is formed on a slide 81 which is connected to an arm 83 on the shaft 36 and is depressed to release the arm 84 when the hammer-bail is released. A stop 87 on a slide 88 limits movement of the arm 84 when released. The movements of the pawl 52 are limited for double and single line-spacing by contact of lugs 65, 67 on the bell crank 53 with stops 66, 68 respectively. The stop 68 is formed on a bar 69 connected by a bell crank 71 and link 75 to a pin 76 on the slide 88, the shaft 43 having a finger 77 engaging the pin. Before a total is printed, the slide is depressed, the bar 69 is retracted, and double line-spacing is effected. The plate 91 carries a blanking-pawl 95 co-operating with a ratchet disc 94 geared to the platen shaft. At each item-printing operation, the pawl 52 effects line-spacing, the ratchet disc 94 is advanced, and the pawl 95 moves idly. At the total-printing operation, the slide 88 is depressed to permit of double line-spacing, and the stop 87 is moved out of the path of the arm 84. The link 56 is thereby permitted to make an abnormal movement, and the pawl 95 is enabled after varying lost-motion to engage one of the teeth and turn the ratchet disc to effect blank-feed, the feed being determined by the lost-motion. The pawl 95 can be turned on to a stop 99 to silence the blanking- mechanism, and the line-spacing and blanking- mechanisms can be silenced by moving a fingerlever 100 into engagement with a stop 101 on the ratchet disc. The bar 69 is secured to the bell crank 71 by a screw 70 passing through a slot 72, the arrangement enabling the bar to be set in retracted position when double-line spacing is required for the items.
