A power-operated typewriter or like machine has a continuouslydriven snatch roll or bar 17 with which, on actuation of a key E, an interponent pawl element 30 pivoted on an actuator 18 is engaged to move a control trigger member 33 to its releasing position and effect a transient engagement of roll 17 and element 30 to operate a type-bar 16, after which the parts are returned to their normal positions. An extension 102 of control member 33 has a lost-motion connection provided by a pin 101 on extension 102 and slot 100 in link 99 with a cam follower member 71 during the above cycle of operations but on depression of a key F it is moved to the lett, by mechanism 90-98 and follower 71 into engagement with a power-driven cam lobe 60 to allow nose 35 of element 33 to move from a holding surface on element 30 to effect a selected number of cycles of operation of the type-bar 16, e.g. for underlining, repeat printing, repeat operation of back-spacing, letter-spacing or linespacing mechanisms. The follower 71 is normally displaced axially from the cam lobe 60 but is moved into engaging alignment by a bellcrank mechanism 85 operated by a linkage 83- 94 and the key F. A spring 32 re-engages the elements 30, 33.
