Abstract

344,965. Typewriters. DEGENER, G. O., 1190, Eddy Street, San Francisco, and ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc., 316, Broadway, New York, both in U.S.A. Dec. 23, 1929, No. 39357. [Class 100 (iv).] Carriage-returning mechanism; carriage-releasing arrangements; line-spacing mechanism.-In a power operated mechanism, a driving-shaft clutch connected to the carriage is closed and opened by means under control of the carriage-returning key and carriage respectively, and the carriagereturning key is arranged also to release momentarily the carriage, and thereby permit the carriage to move out of engagement with the clutch-opening means before the return movement starts. The driving- shaft clutch may operate also line-spacing mechanism, the released movement of the carriage enabling the line-spacing mechanism to operate even if the carriage is in the initial position. The line-spacing mechanism may be operated without return of the carriage by means of a key controlling relay mechanism. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 5, 14, and 15 a shaft 25 geared to a motor carries a loose pinion 26 gearing with a drum 18 connected to a band 17 which passes over a roller 20 and is connected by a bell crank 6 to a link 10 carrying the line-spacing pawl 14. A clutch-member 27 on the pinion cooperates with an axially movable clutch-member 28 engaging a lever 30 connected to a spring 33. Movement of the clutch-member 28 is normally prevented by a latch 43 which abuts on a slide 40 connected by a bell crank 34 to the lever 30. A carriage-returning key 49 is connected directly or by the relay-device 51 described in Specification 303,109, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.], to a line 55 which is connected by rocking arms 56, 59 and a link 60 to a lever 61 for releasing the latch. A member 78 for returning the slide 40 is mounted universally on pivots 79, 81, and has flanges 85, 87, Fig. 5, for engaging a cam 84 and a screw 86 on the margin stop F. For releasing the carriage B, the shaft 58 carrying the arms 56, 59 is provided with an arm 64 engaging the lifting-arm 66 of the feed-rack 2. A latch 70 co-operates with an arm 64 on the shaft 58, and with a finger 77 on a rocking arm 75 having a roller 76 engaging the band 17, a spring 74 holding the latch in engagement with the arm 64a. On depression of the carriagereturning key the feed-rack is lifted and the latch 70 and arm 64a co-operate to hold the feed-rack, thereby permitting the spring drum to move the carriage towards the left. After a short movement, for instance ten letter-spaces, the latch 43 is released, the clutch members engage, and the band is wound on the drum. At the start of the winding movement the band between the roller 20 and the drum is straightened and the arm 75 is rocked, the latch 70 being thereby released to permit re-engagement of the feed-rack. On further movement of the band, the line-spacing mechanism is operated, and the carriage is returned. When the carriage approaches initial position, the cam 84 engages the flange 85 and rocks the member 78 about the pivots 79, thereby causing a lug 82 on the member to move into the path of the slide 40. When the carriage reaches its initial position, the screw 86 engages bhe flange 87, the member is rocked about the pivot 81, and the slide disengages the clutch-members and is again engaged by the latch 43. A pin 89 on the member co-operates with a pivoted dog 90 to hold the member during engagement of the cam 84 and flange 85. If the carriage-returning key is operated during engagement of the cam and flange, the feed-rack is lifted, the spring drum is permitted to move the carriage towards the left, the member 78 returning to normal position, and thereafter the carriage is returned and the linespacing mechanism is operated in the abovedescribed manner. If the carriage-returning key is operated when the carriage is in initial position, the carriage is moved idly towards the left and right and line-spacing is effected. For effecting line-spacing without returning the carriage and in any position thereof, the drum 18, Figs. 14 and 15, is provided with a pinion 18a co-operating with a pawl 97 on a bell crank 96 connected by a link 103 to a bell crank 107 engaging a lever 108 which is rocked by a relay device 109 when a line-spacing key 110 is depressed. A cam 110 normally holds the pawl out of engagement with the pinion. In an alternative arrangement, the lever 108 operates a detent for locking the drum 18, and rocks a bell crank carrying a guide-roller for the band. Specifications 302,246, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.], also is referred to.
