Letter-spacing.-A carriage escapement member 131 is provided with teeth co-operating with three dogs 133, 134, 135 pivoted to a slide 137 and spaced about by a distance equal to an integral multiple of three times the spacing unit plus one such unit, the teeth of the member 131 having a pitch of three time said unit. When a key is pressed a stepped sector 171 is set according to the number of units of spacing required, and a shaft 228 carrying levers 147, 148, 149, 150 is rotated, the levers releasing the dogs and also releasing the slide 137 from a latch 143. The slide is then moved the required spacing distance to the right against the sector 171 by a spring 141, the carriage meanwhile being held by a set of retaining dogs. The dogs 133, 134, 135 are then restored and the retaining dogs released, whereupon the carriage moves to the left until the latch 143 re-engages the slide. Tabulating mechanism; carriage-return mechanism.-Actuation of the tabulating or carriagereturn key engages a clutch 244 on a continuously rotating shaft 70 to rotate a cam 243 and rotate a shaft 228 through a linkage 240, 239, 235. The shaft 228 carries levers 225, 226, 227 which release the dogs. At the same time, a lug 246 releases a latch 247, which is rocked clockwise, and a lug 254 disengages the clutch after 130 degrees of revolution. The carriage is now moved to the left by a spring or to the right by an electric motor until the carriage stop or left margin stop encounters the corresponding counterstop, which displaces a member 258 to release a pin 238 from a shoulder 237, a spring 236 releasing the clutch for re-engagement, through a linkage 257, 255, so that the cam rotates to its original position. The shaft 228 is also rotated to return the dogs to an intermediate position in which only the dog 133 engages the escapement teeth, the arm 245 resting against the lift of the latch 247. When the shaft 146 is rocked for a subsequent letterspacing, or when the back-space key is pressed, the latch 247 is swung counter-clockwise by a link 251 or a slide 199 respectively, to release the lug 246, returning the dogs to the control of the levers 147, 148, 149. Carriage release.-A manually operated bar 229 engages the end of the lever 227 to rock the shaft 228, the latch 247 controlling the return of the dogs in the same way as above.
