Abstract

1,189,765. Typewriters. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C. S.p.A. 2 Feb., 1968 [6 Feb., 1967], No. 5525/68. Heading B6F. Single pawl escapment; back-spacing.-A back-spacing mechanism for half-spaces comprises a toothed rack 8 on the typewriter carriage normally engaged by a single escapement dog 9 and which is momentarily disengaged to permit letter-spacing, and a backspacing pawl 41 which is firstly pivotal to engage the rack and is then moved to the right, Fig. 1, to effect back-spacing; the pawl 41 having a lug 52 so that when, and only when, it is in the rightward position it can be released simultaneously with the disengagement of the escapement dog 9. The escapement dog 9 is actuated from a part revolution cam 21 clutched to a continuously rotating drive shaft 22 causing a follower lever 25 to pivot a lever 27 which firstly pivots a lever 32 having a lug 36 at the other end that engages a shoulder 37 to release the dog 9. Then the lever 27 engages a projection 30 of a hook 18 causing the release of a lever 11 upon upon which the dog 11 is mounted at 10. As the lever 11 rotates up to a stop 38 it causes the dog 9 to move to the right so it engages the next tooth of the rack 8. The rack 8 being urged to the left in a letter-space direction, effects a whole letter-space. The type-carriage is back-spaced by half a letter-space by the operation of a key 71 and a part revolution clutch 60 operates a follower lever 56, bell-crank 47 and a connecting rod 45. This causes a lever 43 to pivot on pin 44 whereby the pawl 41 firstly engages the rack and then moves it a half letter-space in the backward direction. If the key is released the carriage returns to the original position, but if the key 71 is held depressed and a type key operated, the rocking of the lever 27 turns a shaft 28 which has a lever 53 which engages the lug 52 on the pawl 41 which is thereby released.
