A typewriter having a proportional letterspacing mechanism including an escapement rack 1, Fig. 2, and three contiguous pawls 4 is provided with a carriage release and retain control device comprising a locking member 62 whose detent 63 is moved with its detent lug 63<SP>111</SP> into contact with a pawl arranger 54 to pivot and lock the latter so that the pawls are disengaged from the escapement rack teeth 3, then the carriage is moved in the return direction, the locking member being pivoted by the movement of the carriage on account of frictional contact of the locking member arms 62<SP>1</SP> with the escapement rack 3. When the carriage reaches its left-hand margin stop 64 a shock absorbing device (not shown) reverses its direcrection of movement whereby the locking member is disengaged and the pawl arranger 54, Fig. 3, is moved out of engagement with the pawls 4 by a bell-crank lever 65 to prevent unnecessary overrun exceeding one tooth pitch t. The bellcrank lever 65 has an arm 65<SP>1</SP> which pivots a bail 57 counterclockwise during the shock absorbing process to maintain the pawl arranger 54 in contact with the pawls 4 until the spring 66 is allowed to contract thereupon the bellcrank lever 65 is rocked counterclockwise to force the arm 65<SP>1</SP> into abutment with a pin 53 thereupon the bail 57 is rocked clockwise about a pin 43 moving the pawl rocker 54 in an arcuate path in a clockwise direction to allow the pawls 4 to engage the rack teeth 3 with their pawl teeth 5.
