Abstract

374,499. Typewriters. JAMES, R. W., 11, Queen Victoria Street, London.- (Remington Typewriter Co. ; Ilion, New York, U.S.A.) March 11, 1931, No. 7542. [Class 100 (iv).] Type-lever actions; pivots.-In noiseless actions comprising normally disconnected controlling means such as pivoted weights for slowing down the type-levers, the controlling means and type levers have camming engagement, and the typelevers are preferably formed without lateral bends and have their pivots arranged in a plane that is normal to a plane containing the printing line. Detachable pivots, described below, may be provided for parts of the actions. In the action shown in Fig. 1, a type-lever 3 has a heel 10 having lost-motion engagement with a hook 11 on a link 12 which is suspended from a link 14 and is connected by a link 21, bellcrank 24, and link 30 to a key-lever 31. The type-lever and the link 14 are pivoted in a horizontal segment 1, and the link 12 is guided by the segment and rests on a plate 17. The type-lever, links, and bell crank are arranged in a plane radiating from the printing point, and the key-lever is arranged in a fore-and-aft plane, the link 30 being at the intersection of the planes. The type-lever is formed without bends, and the plane of the type-lever pivots 4 is normal to a plane containing the printing line. A weight 47, pivoted in a segment 9 and arranged in a plane parallel to that of the typelever, has a cam slot 48 for engaging a pin 43 on an arcuate arm 19 on the type-lever. The weight may be normally locked by engagement of pins 49, 50 thereon with the arm. On depression of the key-lever, the type-lever is positively operated, and when the type-lever reaches the vertical position the pin 43 cooperates with the cam slot 48 to impart an accelerated forwards movement to the weight. When the type-head 6 approaches the platen 5, the key-lever is arrested by a stop 31 a, and the movement of the type-lever is completed by momentum. The weight can move slightly after the type-head reaches the platen, the arrangement obviating the employment of means for relatively adjusting the type-head and platen. After impression, the action is returned by a spring 26, rebound of the typelever from a rest 8 being prevented by cooperation of the arm 19 with a lug 18 on the link 12. The bell cranks 24 are arranged in slots 39 in a segment 36 and are each mounted on a detachable self-adjusting pivot 35, Fig. 5, which is placed in a hole 40 and has rounded ends 42 engaging the sides and bottom of the hole. Keys.-To provide uniform touch and dip for the keys 33, the arms 29 of the bell cranks 24 are of graded lengths, the longest arms being associated with the key-levers of the top bank. Case-shift mechanism.-The segments 1, 9 have vertical shift movement, the links 21 passing from one of the horizontal to the other during the movement. Alternatively platenshift may be employed.
