[Class 100 (iv).] Relay back - spacing mechanism. - The mechanism is operated by a member co-operating with a cam which is adapted to be coupled to a driving-shaft on depression of the backspacing key. The mechanism may comprise members which are mounted on two relatively movable sections of the framework and are moved into co-operative position when the sections are brought together. As applied to the computing-typewriter described in Specification 374,109, the back-spacing pawl 94 is connected to an arm 82 on a rock-shaft 68 which is yieldingly coupled to an arm 67 co-operating with a pin 65 on a bell-crank 63 having a roller 62 co-operating with a loose cam 40 on a driving-shaft 37. The yielding coupling for the arm 67 consists of a coiled spring 77 which normally holds a finger 74, fast on the shaft, in contact with a pin 81 on the arm. The cam carries a spring-urged pawl 43 adapted to cooperate with a toothed wheel 42 fast on the driving-shaft. The pawl is normally held in disengaged position by a shoulder on a rocking arm 47 which engages a shoulder 125 on a link 113 connected to a back-spacing keylever 104. The link is formed with a finger 116 and an incline 122 co-operating with a rod 117. On depression of the back-spacing key, the arm 47 is moved rearwards, the pawl engages the toothed wheel, and the bell-crank 63 is rocked to operate the back-spacing mechanism. The incline 122 releases the link from the arm, thereby permitting the arm to return and release the pawl after one revolution of the cam. The spring 77 yields if the carriage 101 is obstructed. The back-spacing key can be depressed repeatedly for multiple back-spacing, or the incline 122 may be omitted from the link so that multiple back-spacing can be effected by holding down the key. A returning-spring 124 holds the members in normal position, the pawl-spring 52 being prevented from turning the cam by co-operation of a high part 40a thereof with the roller 62. The bellcrank 63 and the members actuated thereby are mounted in a frame section 11 which supports the machine and is hinged on a frame section 10 carrying the driving-shaft and associated parts.
