Shift-key and space-key actions.-In machines having carriage-shift mechanism that is operated and locked by depressing a locking shift-key and is released by depressing a releasing-key, the lock. ing and releasing-keys are adapted to serve also as spacing-keys, the usual spacing-key being dispensed with. The locking-key lever a is secured to a sleeve b provided with an arm d for operating a lever p connected to the shift mechanism. The releasing-key lever g is secured to a spindle c provided with an arm h for releasing a catch i co-operating with a. pin q on the lever p. The spacing-mechanism is operated by an arm l mounted freely on the spindle c and yieldingly connected to the sleeve b and spindle c by means of springs r, s which are interposed between members f, k on the sleeve and spindle, and members m, n on the arm respectively. The returning- springs e, t for the arm d and catch i prevent the key-levers a, g from transmitting movement to each other. In the normal position of the carriage, the releasing-key lever is employed as a spacing-key. On depressing the locking-key lever a, the carriage is shifted and locked and the spacing-mechanism is operated, the locking-key lever then returning to the normal position and being employed thereafter as a spacing-key. On depressing the releasing-key lever, the carriage returns to the normal position and the spacing- mechanism is operated, the releasing-key lever then returning to the normal position, and being employed thereafter as a spacing-key.
