[Class 100 (iv)] Shift-key locks.-A key-lever for releasing the shift-locking means is connected to a pivoted arm which completes the stroke of the keylever by momentum and thereby permits the key-lever to be operated by a touch similar to that employed for the action key-levers. In the mechanism shown in the Figure, a release-key lever F<1> is mounted between action key-levers F on a shaft 5 and is connected by the usual linkage 7 .. 12 to a dummy type-lever E. The release-key 6a is preferably arranged in the front bank. An arm 41, having an adjustable stop 43 in the path of the keylever F<1>, is secured to a shaft 13 provided with another arm H carrying a bell-crank 18 which is connected by links 20, 21 and a bell-crank 22 to a bell-crank 25 for shifting the type-lever segment D. A stud 39 on the arm H co-operates with a pivoted latch J having a cam-edge 34 co-operating with a roller 35 on a lever I. provided with a shift-locking key 30. The arm H has a stop-finger 27 which co-operates with a bracket 11. When the key 30 is depressed, the latch J depresses and locks the arm H, the shaft 13 is rocked, and the link 25 depresses the segment D. When the operator taps the release-key 6a, the lever E is swung into proximity to the platen C, and the momentum of the lever then causes the keylever F <1> to engage the stop 43 and depress slightly the arms 41, H to release the latch J and thereby permit the parts to return to normal position. Letter - spacing mechanism.-For effecting letter-spacing when the shift-lock is released, the lever E may be provided with a link 46 for operating the universal bar 47.
