[Class 100 (iv)] A carriage-stop mounted on a bar on the carriage and provided with a latch is releasable by means of a member which is normally out of contact with the bar and latch and is adapted, on operation, to release the latch, and then interlock therewith to permit of the carriage being adjusted to set. the stop. In the case of a linelock stop, the means for operating the latchreleasing. member is arranged also to release the line-locking device and thereby permit use of the space-bar for adjusting the carriage. The carriage B of the. machine shown in Figs. 1 and 4 is provided with a rack 25 supporting margin and line-lock stops F<SP>1</SP>, F which are secured by latches 29', 29 and co-operate with a counterstop 16 and a line-locking member 38 pivoted thereon respectively. The machine is now provided in proximity to the typeguide E, with vertically movable fingers 39<SP>1</SP>, 39 which engage guide-screws 40<SP>1</SP>, 40 and have notches 44<SP>1</SP>, 44 for engaging lugs 34<SP>1</SP>, 34 on the latches 29<SP>1</SP>, 29. Margin-setting keys 57', 57 are connected by links 55', 55 to bell-cranks 51<SP>1</SP>, 51 engaging lever 49', 49 which are pivoted to depending parts 45<SP>1</SP>, 45 of the fingers 39<SP>1</SP>, 39. To set the stop F', the carriage is moved to the right until it is arrested by the counterstop 16, the key 57' is operated, and the finger 39 raises the latch 29'. The carriage is then adjusted into the required margin position, the stop F<SP>1</SP> being returned by co-operation of the notch 44<SP>1</SP> and lug 34<SP>1</SP>, and on release of the key, the latch re-engages the rack and secures the stop. The key 57 is operated and the carriage is adjusted in a similar manner to set the stop F. To permit employment of the space-bar for adjusting the carriage, the key 57 is arranged to rock rearwardly the counterstop 16 and thereby render ineffective the line-locking member. For this purpose, the bell-crank 51 is connected to a link 62 having a slot 65 engaging a pin 66 on a rock-arm 67 which is connected by a link 70 to an extension 72 of the counterstop 16. The fingers 39, 39' are formed with inclines 84, 85, 84<SP>1</SP>, 85<SP>1</SP>, for releasing the latches 29, 29<SP>1</SP>, and merely preventing damage if the fingers are raised inadvertently. Instead of the key-buttons 57, 57', the projecting ends of the links 55, 55<SP>1</SP> may be arranged under indicia on the framework. A tabulating-stop 18, connected by a link 20 to the stop 16, is operated by a tabulating-key-lever 73 having a lug 80 which abuts on the rock-arm 67. A rock-arm 81 in the path of the extension 72 releases the carriage. The slot 65 in the link 62 prevents the tabulating-mechanism from being operated by the margin-stop mechanism and vice versa.
