ently present in known machines of the character mentioned.
Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of a bookkeeping machine wherein the combination of the typewriting and calculating machines are effected by simple means, thus reducing the possibilities of inoperativeness due to breakage of unnecessary parts.
Still another object of the invention contemplates the provision of a combined typewriter and calculating machine, having a common carriage, in order that either the typewriter or calculating machine may be used at will and at any time to perform workon any portion of the sheet, without the necessity of changing the position of the sheet in the carriage.
The invention further aims to provide a combined typewriter and calculating machine having a common carriage, and wherein is embodied a simpliedmechanism associated with said carriage for permitting the rapid adaptation of the latter to the work of the typewriter or of the calculating machine, respectively; said simplified mechanism being capable of readily setting the carriage for operation or to disable the same, dependent upon whether it is desired that the carriage should travel step by step for text work, or
sons skilled in the art, I have in theaccompany ing drawings and in the detailed description based thereupon, set out a possible embodiment of the same.
In these drawings:
Figure v1 is a cross section of my improved device Vtaken on line 1-1 of Figure 2 in the direction indicated by the arrow a;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the device;
Figure 3 is a plan of the same;
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail of the feed-gear mechanism embodied in the invention, and
Figure 5 is a rear elevation of the same.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, I
(Cl. 23S-58),
have shown the invention in the form of a combined typewriter and calculating machine. Obviously, augreat number of adding machines or typewriters may also be combined, the only necessary requirement being that all machines possess a common carriage.
The typewriter 1 is placed beside the calculating machine 2 with no connection therebetween except that both machines have a common platen and carriage 3. The movement of the platen 3, may be controlled by means of a guide rule or tabulator, feed rod or similar tting 4 in the manner well known in the art.
The feed rule 4 or the like may carry pins 5 adapted to come in contact with suitable carriage stopping means provided upon ordinary typewriting machines, to stop the carriage and platen 3 when working with the calculating machine 2. Should the writing area of the bookkeeping form come into the working column of the typewriter, the latter can be shifted and stopped in proper position by manual operation or by means of the pins 5.
In the machine illustrated in the drawings, an arrangement for manual shifting is shown, and for that purpose the machine is provided with a depressable key 8 connected to one end of a rocking lever 6 pivotally supported on pivot 7. The key 8 is formed with a notch 9 engageable with a catch 10 to lock said lever 6 in operative position.
The other end 11 of the lever 6 extends within a slot 12 formed at the lower extremity of a hollow standard 13 wherein is received a pin 14 free to slide up and down in said hollow standard. The lower end of the pin 14 rests upon the ad- 90 jacent end of the rocking lever 6, and due to its own weight, is maintained in close contact with said lever.
The free upper end of the pin 14 carries a roller 15 disposed beneath the feed rule 4, and 95. adapted to be brought in contact with the same to guide the movement thereof and consequently that of the carriage, and to raise said feed rule, thereby throwing the stop pins 5 out of operative range.
Secured to the lever 6 between its pivotal point and that end portion received in the guide memengagement with the feed wheel upon restoration u.
los i of the member 17 and associated parts to their normal position. v
As more clearly shown in Figure 4 of the draw ings, the pawl 20 is mounted opposite the feed nger 22 actuated by means of the rod 23 connected to the ordinary mechanism of the typewriter for operation by the keys thereon. The ratchet or feed wheel 21 carries a pinion 24 which engages the rack 25 of the carriage for moving lthe same.
While using the calculating machlne,-the rock ing lever 6 is in the position shown in the drawings, and therefore, the pawl 20 is moved out of engagement with the feed wheel 21, thus freeing the same to turn in either direction and rendering it without action upon the machine during the lreturning of the carriage or during its cessation out of operative range. Simultaneously with this movement, the finger 16 will be raised, pivoting the lever 17 so that its end 19 acting upon the pawl 20 causes the same to engage the feed or ratchet wheel 21, thereby permitting the latter to move in one direction only, so that the machine may now function as a typewriter. On -finishing the typing, it is then only necessary to release the key 8 by disengaging the same from the catch 10, and the carriage is thereupon placed in readiness for further calculation work in the manner hereinbefore described. Y
Manifestly, the construction herein shown is capable of considerable modification and such modications as come within the scope of my claims, I consider within the Aspirit of my inven- K tion.
I claim:
1. In a' bookkeeping machine of the character described comprising a typewriter and a calculating machine disposed side by side and each adapted to form impressions upon the same sheetl of paper, a single movable carriage and a. platen mounted on said carriage and adapted to carry said sheet, feed mechanism for said carriage, the
combination of means mounted adjacent said feed mechanism and adapted to engage the latter to prevent retrograde movement of said feeding mechanism during operation of said typewriter, means for retaining said first-named means out of contact with said feeding mechanism during operation of said calculating machine, means on determined position during operation of said calculating machine, and movable key means operatively associated With said first named means and adapted, upon depression, to' simultaneously move said positioning means out of operative position and said first named ,means into engagement with said feeding mechanism, said key means being further adapted, upon return from depressed position to original position, to simultaneously restore said positioning means and said first named means to their original positions.
2. In a bookkeeping machine of the character described comprising a typewriter and a calculating machine disposed side by side and each adapted to form impressions on a sheet of paper, a single movable carriage and a platen mounted on the latter and adapted to support said sheet, feed mechanism for said carriage, the combination of a finger pivotally mounted adjacent said feed mechanism and adapted to enter into engagement with said mechanism to prevent retrograde movement thereof during operation of the typewriter, means for retaining said finger out of contact with said feed mechanism during operation of said calculating machine, said means including a system of levers, one of which is in contact with said finger, a movable guide rule provided with means for positioning said carriage and associated platen in predetermined position during operation of said calculating machine, a depressible key connected to said system of levers and adapted, upon depression, to simultaneously move said positioning means out of operative position'and said finger into engagement with said feeding mechanism, said key being further adapted, upon return from depressed position to original position, to simultaneously move said positioning means into operative position and said
