Abstract

218,907. Fairweather, W. C., (Underwood Typewriter Co.). Nov. 13, 1923. Space-key actions; letter-spacing mechanism. -In machines, such as are described in Specification 158,147, having the dog-rocker 17 mounted on the carriage-shift frame 11 and operated, when the printing-key levers 1 are depressed, by means of a member or arm 15 on the universal-bar frame 13, the space-bar 28 is connected to a member 35 engaging the dog-rocker and adapted to operate the dog-rocker independently of the universal bar. The universal bar-frame may be connected to ribbon-vibrating mechanism, the arrangement enabling the vibrator to remain at rest when the space-bar is actuated. The member 35 preferably consists of a lever of the third order, having a finger 40 engaging the dog-rocker, and connected by a link 34 to an arm 32 actuated bv the space-bar. The dog-rooker is preferably mounted on a vertical axis so as to permit shift without altering the leverage of the members 15, 35. The shift and ribbon-vibrator mechanism described in Specifications and 166,846 may be employed.
