Carriage-shift mechanism; shift-key actions.-In shift mechanism having the shift-key lever so arranged as to lock the carriage in the normal position, a depending arm on the shift frame or support is operated by a shift-key lever and co-operates therewith to lock the shift frame or support in normal position. In the portable machine shown in the Figure. the carriage F is movable obliquely by a shift frame comprising a member H, a rock-shaft K, and a lug P co-operating with stop-screws N, O to limit the shift movements. The shift-key levers are secured to a shaft 10 and the left-hand lever 12 is provided with upward and rearward extensions 14, 15, The extension 14 is connected to a link 6 having a fork 5 engaging a pin 4 on a depending arm 1 on the rock-shaft. The extension 15 has a lug 16 which normally locks the shift frame by engaging a screw 3 on the arm 1. When either shift-key is depressed, the extension 15 releases the arm before the link is effective to rock the arm, since the end of the extension 15 moves more quickly than the end of the extension 14 ; moreover there may be lost motion between the link 6 and the pin 4 or the extension 14. Key locks.-A locking-key 20, pivoted on the shift-key lever 12, is formed with a locking- shoulder 24 for engaging a pin 25 on the framework. On touching either of the main shiftkeys, the locking-key is released and returned to normal position by a spring 22.
