[Class 7 (iii).] An air pocket b in the cylinder head a is provided with a number of pairs of converging holes c<1>, c<2>, leading into a combustion chamber f, corresponding to the number of jets d<1> issuing from an injector d, the jets of fuel and air being preferably arranged fanwise. Some fuel may enter the pocket and after ignition expel the air from it. To insulate the pocket from the cooling effects of the atmosphere or of the engine-cooling water, it may be surrounded by an annular air cavity b<1> to which air is admitted through openings b<2> controlled by a plate b<3> ; or it may be surrounded by asbestos. To allow for expansion the pocket is formed by a corrugated steel tube. To ensure easy starting, a cartridge holder, having one of the holes c<2> drilled in it, is inserted in the pocket.
