Abstract

An alloy suitable for valves, bearings, and other purposes consists of 30-45 per cent. of copper, 40-55 per cent. of nickel, 2-20 per cent. of tin, and 1-20 per cent. of manganese. Small amounts of lead, zinc, and iron may be present. The alloys may be made by melting a copper-nickel alloy with a copper-manganese alloy, the tin being added last. The molten metal is stirred with a wooden or graphite bar, or covered with charcoal, or both.
