[Class 7 (iii).] In a fuelinjection pump the plunger 8, Fig. 4, is depressed in the barrel 9 by the action of pneumatic or mechanical power on a piston 4 against the action of a spring 6. F u e I flows from the suction chamber 1 to the pump chamber 14 through a passage 15 in the plunger 8 and is trapped between the plunger 8 and a plunger 10, which is pressed downwards against the action of a spring 12 until the discharge passage 16 is uncovered. The upward movement of the plunger 10 and thus the amount of the charge, is limited by an adjustable slotted wedge 13 engaging the head 11 of the plunger. The rod 3 of the piston 4 has an oblique portion 3<1> engaging a block 2 to which the injection valve 17 is secured. When the valve 17 is moved to the right fuel is discharged through the passage 16 and grooves 22, 23 in the valve. Simultaneously compressed air is discharged through passages 21, 19, 20. In a modification, Fig. 14, the plunger 8 is integral and coaxial with the injection valve 17. Fuel enters the pump chamber 14 through a port 24 and is discharged through passages 25, 25<1>, 23. Simultaneously compressed air is discharged through passages 21, 19, 20. The chamber 14 is formed between a shoulder on the plunger 8 and a sleeve 10<1> pressed upwards by a spring 12, the upward movement of the sleeve being limited by a wedge 13.
