397,548. Supply holders for yarnwinding and like machines. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.- (Universal Winding Co. ; 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A.) Feb. 26, 1932, No. 5779. [Class 120 (ii).] In yarn or like winding machines the support for the supply package is arranged so that the package extends downwardly and the yarn therefrom passes downwardly to a guide and thence upwardly to the winding-spindle, so that the supply package may be located adjacent to the package being wound while maintaining the necessary length of free yarn between the packages. The holder for the supply package is provided with a retaining device for the bobbin to enable it to be operative when downwardly directed. As applied to a machine such as described in Specification 339,679, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.], wherein a grooved roll 7 serves to traverse the yarn and frictionally drive the winding-cone C which is freely mounted on a dead spindle 10 and held thereon by a latch, a supply holder is carried on an arm 51 adjustably secured to a bracket 21 and the yarn y passes through a guide 48 and a slub-catcher 47, between tension discs 34, and around a guide 33 up to the cone C. The supply holder is provided with oppositely arranged stub spindles 60, 61 on a hub 62, and a retaining-device in the form of arcuate strips 75 is provided to engage the head or flange b<1> of the supply bobbin during the rotation of the holder to bring a new bobbin into position for unwinding and during the unwinding period, but during such rotation the empty bobbin is released and drops into a suitable receptacle. Spring-controlled snap-plungers 68 maintain the holder in position. Modifications of the holder are described for engaging the interior of supply bobbins which are not provided with flanges such as b, latches 87, Fig. 8, and dogs 110 and spring-pressed plungers 103, Fig. 11, being operated during rotation of the holder by suitable surfaces and notches in the axle to grip and release the bobbins as necessary. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, snapplungers 73 serve to maintain the holder in position, but in that shown in Fig. 11 the plungers 103 serve for this purpose as well as for controlling the dogs 110.
