Abstract

529,636. Winding yams and rovings. BRANDWOOD, J. Feb. 23, 1939, No. 5999. [Class 120 (ii)] I[Also in Group IV] Rovings or fully twisted or spun or doubled yarns are wound upon perforated holders with winding tension sufficient to draw the component fibres as far as possible to their full or natural length, the fibres of the roving or yarn of one layer being nipped and held fast in that position or condition by succeeding winding layers, and mercerising and other liquids are then passed through the wound masses of roving or yarn by differential pressure. The materials are thus mercerised and rendered lustrous. For winding a roving on to a perforated holder, the roving may be passed over a tensioning device from a holder upon which it has already been wound, and the supply holder and the perforated holder are rotated at equal peripheral speeds. As shown in Fig. 1, a roving is taken from a bobbin 17, over a spring tension device 20, 21, and is wound upon a perforated bobbin 8. Bobbin 8 is frictionally driven by drum 10 which is geared to drum 16. The drum 16 drives bobbin 17 by friction. The traverse mechanism comprises a pulley 22 mounted on one end of arm 23, the other end of which is attached to the traverse rod 7. This rod is provided with arm 25 which bears an anti-friction bowl 26 engaging in the helical slot 6 in the traverse cam 5. This cam is geared to drum 10 at a reduced ratio so as to cross-wind the roving on drum 8. A roller weight 29 within drum 8 presses the latter upon its driving drum. The material wound on the perforated bobbins is placed in a liquid-treatment apparatus and mercerising and washing liquids are passed through the windings by differential pressure. Air may be passed through the windings to remove surplus liquid, and the materials may then be dried by passing hot air through the windings. The device shown in Fig. 1 may be used for re-winding the treated rovings. When winding yarn or roving on to the perforated bobbins the supply bobbins, cops, or other units may be moistened. Already twisted yarns may be wound on to the perforated holders by taking them off a pirn or other package, leading them through tensioning eyes 31, Fig. 3, and thence to a perforated drum 8 mounted on winding mandrel 33. Specification 482,817 is referred to.
