Abstract

The invention is concerned with a continuous winding machine of the kind in which when a package 29, Fig. 2, (not shown), is to be doffed a frame 13 rotates to remove the package 29 from, and move the next empty bobbin 181 into, an operative relationship with the bobbin driving means, for example a drive roll 26. The invention is characterized by the inclusion of means that ensure that the completed package shall not unwind at least until the yarn is broken between the completed package 29 and the empty bobbin 181. As described this is achieved by mounting each bobbin on its shaft with intermediate unidirectional means 17 (Fig. 1, not shown) that prevent the bobbins from rotating backwards on their shafts. As a package 29 increases in diameter the frame 13 rises about the pivot 28. When the package 29 is to be doffed the piston 47 moves the toothed rack 45 to the left causing the cam 41 to rotate about axle 36. As the cam 41 bears against a fixed member 43 the frame 13 is forced to rise and so lift the package 29 off the drive roll 26. The piston 47 then moves the rack 45 to the right and this time a unidirectional device 42 couples the cam 41 to the shaft 36 so that the frame 13 is caused to rotate and, because the cam 41 rests on the fixed member 43, the frame 13 is lowered thus bringing the empty bobbin 181 into engagement with the drive roll 26. One end of each bobbin fits in an annular member 22 the outer surface of each of which is covered with a roughened material. When the new bobbin 181 has been moved to the winding position a yarn traversing member moves the yarn on to the roughened surface 22 that grips the yarn and causes it to be wound up. Since the package 29 cannot rotate backwards the yarn length between the package 29 and the new bobbin 181 breaks and the traversing device then feeds the yarn on to the new bobbin 181.
