Abstract

o-Oxyazo dyes are made by combining a diazotized o-amino-phenol-monosulphonic acid or a nuclear substitution product thereof not containing a further sulphonic group with a benzo-2 : 4-dihydroxyquinoline or a derivative thereof. They dye wool red to violet with the aid of a chromium mordant by the single-bath process. In examples the following dyes are described: (1) and (2) 4-chloro-2-amino-1-phenol-5- or 6-sulphonic acid, or 4-nitro-2-amino-1-phenol-6-sulphonic acid --> 7 : 8-benzo-2 : 4-dioxyquinoline, (3) 4-chlor-2-amino-1-phenol-6-sulphonic acid --> 5 : 6-benzo-2 : 4-dioxyquinoline, (4) 4-nitro-2-amino-1-phenol-6-sulphonic acid --> 6 : 7-benzo-2 : 4-dioxyquinoline. Benzo-2 : 4-dioxyquinolines. The 5 : 6-benzo derivative is made by heating 2-naphthylamine with malonic acid ester and the 6 : 7-benzo derivative from acetyl-2 : 3-amino-naphthoric acid.
