Abstract

395,188. Water-tube steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Babcock & Wilcox Co. ; 85, Liberty Street, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 9, 1932, No. 25144. [Class 123 (ii).] In a steam boiler having vertical, oppositelydisposed headers 11, 12 with flat and parallel adjacent faces and horizontal rows of water tubes 10 extending between and having ends entering openings in the faces, each tube being straight and horizontally-inclined for the major portion of its length, the upper end of each tube has a downward bend and the lower end has an upward bend 25 whereby the ends of the tubes are normal to the adjacent faces, and each of the tubes has a reverse bend at each end in a horizontal plane, while the centres of the alternate tube holes in each vertical row of tube holes in each header are located on opposite sides of the centre line of the inner face of the headers, so that the tubes are vertically staggered. One end of each tube is tapered from the main portion to its extremity so that the outline of the tapered part 25, 26 when projected on the plane of the bend 27 does not extend outside the line defining the main portion of the tube when projected on said plane. The tube is tapered at least through the bend at that end, the major portion of the taper at the bend being on the side adjacent the centre of curvature. The other end is expanded to form a collar 22.
