Abstract

394,676. Liquid-fuel injectors; burners. FRANKS, E. A., 5, Caegwyn Road, Whitchurch, Glamorgan. Sept. 22, 1931, No. 26479. [Class 7 (iii).] The spraying orifice of a liquid-fuel injector or burner is formed between laterally-moving parts which are opened by the issuing fuel against the action of springs. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the fuel is supplied from a passage 3 to a duct 7 provided between the shaped inner edges of two plate-like members 8, 9, which are located between two semicylindrical members 6, the assembly being housed in an outer casing 1. The outer edge of the plate 9 is relieved slightly as shown in Fig. 1 to permit the outward movement of the member under the fuel pressure against the action of an adjustably spring-loaded plunger 12 the contacting portions 10 of the plates then separating to pass the fuel. Simultaneously with the fuel delivery air is admitted under pressure at 4, Fig. 2 and reaches an annular, groove 19 surrounding the nozzle outlet where it raises a spring-loaded valve 15 and mixes with and atomizes the fuel at the nozzle outlet. At the end of the injection period the fuel and air pressures are reduced allowing the outlet valves to close. Water is then admitted at 5 and flows from an annular groove 17 over the upper face of the valve 15 to the nozzle outlet ; on the re-establishment of the air pressure the water injection is automatically checked by the valve 15.
