Abstract
394,172. Door fastenings. NEWMAN & SONS, Ltd., W. and NEWMAN, H. G., 268, Hospital Street, Birmingham. Sept. 3, 1932, No. 24596. [Class 44.] The outside knob 6 of an emergency or other door fastening normally turns idly on its spindle 5 but can be coupled thereto by the engagement of a clutch member 27, controlled by a revolving barrel 21 on the knob, with a clutch member 15 on the spindle. The revolving barrel 21 carries a quick-pitched screw 25 which engages with a screw-threaded hole 26 to slide the clutch member 27 on a pin 28. The members 15, 27 carry dogs 16, 29 which engage with one another. If the member 27 is advanced with the dogs out of register, the member 15 is pressed back against a spring 18 and springs forward when the knob is turned to bring the dogs into register. The knob shank 7 bears in a bush 8 secured to the door by bolts 9, and is retained by the spreading of its end 11 on to a ring 12. The outer end of the spindle is supported by a collar 13 pinned to the spindle and bearing in the knob shank. The revolving barrel 21 is locked to the outer barrel 20 by pin-tumbler, disc or other mechanism and is held against longitudinal movement by end flanges. The outer barrel is secured to the knob by a flange 23 and a ring nut 22.
