393,656. Tunnel, shaft, &c. linings. CLARKE, H. A., The Bungalow, Start Lane, Whaley Bridge, Cheshire. Dec. 12, 1931, No. 34463. [Class 85.] A lining for pit shafts, tunnels, &c., comprises one or more reinforced-concrete bearers, precast or moulded in situ, formed on the principle of a spiral, i.e. so that in each turn round the interior of the shaft the bearer also advances longitudinally along the shaft. The shaft may be circular or of other cross section, e.g. square or rectangular, and the longitudinal advance of the bearer may be uniform throughout the turn or, in the case of a square or rectangular shaft, may be confined to one or two sides of the shaft. A circular shaft is lined with a spiral reinforced concrete bearer a the cross section of which may be as shown in Fig. 2, grooves x being provided to accommodate the reinforcement y which may be embedded in cement filling the grooves x. The lining may be strengthened by lagging of timber, steel plates, corrugated sheet, brickwork, concrete, &c., preferably with reinforced concrete slabs b placed at intervals, or the lagging may consist of reinforced concrete slabs b<1> in close formation. The strength of the lining may be increased by using two or more bearers inserted into one another in stepped formation.
