Abstract
392,748. Cooling or heating oil. HEPWORTH, F., Summerfield, Waterloo Road, South Yardley, Birmingham. June 9, 1932, No. 16319. [Classes 29 and 64 (i).] A heat-exchanger, such as an oil cooler, comprises a housing containing a removable tube unit 5 and means, such as a partition 8, to cause fluid in the housing flowing outside the tubes to pass at least twice lengthwise of the apparatus so that the inlet 2 and outlet 4 are brought into proximity, and a pressure relief device is provided to byepass the fluid from the inlet to the outlet. The byepass comprises a disc 13 pressed against the end of partition 8 by a spring 17. A passage 18 is provided to render the pressure at the back of disc equal to that on the outlet side of the apparatus. When the pressure on the inlet side is sufficient, or when a manually-controlled screw, (not shown) is operated the disc 13 compresses spring 17 and allows liquid to flow round the end of partition 8 from inlet to outlet. When the byepass disc is removed by unscrewing the head 15, the aperture left serves for inspection purposes.
