Abstract

391,499. Wheel tyres. WOLFF, S. B., Burleigh, Alric Avenue, Harlesden, London. Oct. 31, 1931, No. 30196. [Classes 144 (i) and 144 (ii).] Wheels for vehicles, trolleys, &c. consist of a metal hub on which is secured or moulded an annular tread of a composition of rubber and fabric intimately compounded and vulcanized to a hard mass, said composition consisting of waste cuttings of rubberized fabric or cord used in the manufacture of tyres &c. The wheel shown in Fig. 2 comprises a hub 1 of round or polygonal section fitted with side-flanges 2 recessed into a disc 3 of the composition which is moulded on to the hub and vulcanized in situ. Alternatively, the tread may be split transversely and the ends vulcanized together after assemblage on the hub. The hub 1 and flanges may be replaced by a short tube which is hammered into a body of the composition. For larger wheels, a spoked or disc wheel may be used having a channelled periphery which engages a corresponding annular projection on a tyre of the composition. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, a tyre 3 has an annular dovetail 21 which is clamped between a flange 19 on the hub 17, and a detachable plate 22 locked by bolts 24. If desired, a tread of soft rubber may be vulcanized on to the tyre.
