Abstract

215,029. Cammell, Laird, & Co., Ltd., and Bailey, A. S. Nov. 7, 1922. Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and rubber-ring and like cushions; hubs.-The tyre e of a railway vehicle wheel has a groove e' on the inner periphery and is mounted on a resilient ring b, preferably of rubber, held in compression between the tyre and wheel rim a' and retained laterally by means such as a fixed rim flange a<2> and detachable ring f, which may be adjusted to vary the degree of compression of the resilient ring b. To facilitate assembly, the ring b may be in segments which are placed in he groove e<2> of the tyre and forced on to the rim over a conical mandrel which compresses the ring radially. The flange a<2> and ring f may embrace the sides of the tyre, as shown in Fig. 3, and may be provided with overhanging edges a<3>, f<3> engaging grooves in the sides of the tyre to prevent it flying off in the event ofbreakage. The centre of the wheel, which may be in the form of a disc, may be rigidly fixed, as by riveting, to a tubular or solid axle c and journal d.
