Addition to 351,062 [Class 36.] In order to damp vibrations in an overhead cable, cable engaging means disposed on the cable at a distance away from the cable supporting means are pivotally connected by link mechanism to the cable supporting means one. of more of the joints in the link mechanism being adapted. yieldingly to resist pivotal motion..The cable-engaging means, which may be arranged to grip the cable or which may be formed as a ring having a sliding fit on the cable, is preferably disposed at a distance away from the cable supporting means approximately equal to half a wave-length of a vibration of the cable. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a cable 7, supported by main clamping members 1, 2 is engaged on each side of the members 1, 2 by subsidiary clamping members 10, 11. Links 13 are pivotally connected at their ends by bolts 15 to lugs 8, 12 formed on the main and subsidiary clamping members 2, 11 respectively, pivotal movement being yieldingly resisted by friction washers 14, for instance of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Ferrodo," which are inserted between the ends of the links 13 and the lugs 8, 12. Fig. 3 shows a modified construction, in which the main clamping members 1, 2 are pivotally supported on a bolt 17 which passes through a fork suspension strap 5 and which pivotally secures the inner ends of the links 13.
