Abstract

389,862. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. Sept. 25, 1931, No. 26827. [Class 7 (iii).] In an internalcombustion engine of the compressionignition type having a spherical combustion chamber F comprising an uncooled plug member G, formed of heatresisting material of relatively low conductivity and arranged so as to be free from any substantial unbalanced stresses from pressure due to combustion, air, forced through a passage G<4> in the plug G, enters the combustion chamber tangentially and sweeps therearound and across the top of the plug G where, immediately prior to its again reaching the passage G<4>, it receives fuel sprayed towards a small area of the plug adjacent the passage by an injector H, the arrangement promoting the combustion of the layers of combustible mixture adjacent the walls of the combustion chamber and so tending to reduce or eliminate odour in the gases exhausted from the cylinder. The air is heated by contact with the part of the plug extending in the direction opposite to that of its flow and the combustible mixture by the part extending in the same direction. The upper portion of the combustion chamber may be provided with a liner K functioning in the same way as the plug G. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 371,025 and 384,340.
