Abstract

346,797. Cylinders. FRASER, R. P., 20, Margravine Gardens, Baron's Court, London. Nov. 20, 1929, No. 35517. [Class. 7 (ii).] The combustion space of an internal-combustion engine is formed so that at the instant of ignition or when the piston is at top dead centre flame and pressure effects resulting from the explosion proceed along two endless paths. In the side-by-side valve engine shown in Fig. 10 the two paths are formed by a bridge-piece 7 extending horizontally across the chamber 4. The bridge-piece may be hollow to facilitate cooling. A sparking plug 5 is located in either of the two positions shown and the wall 8 between the valves is of volute form so that the inlet and exhaust gases shall flow freely past the valve seats. In a modified construction the bridge-piece depends from the head of the combustion chamber. In an overhead valve engine (Fig. 14) the valves 2, 3 are located on an internal projection 6. An annular space 4 with chamfered edges 9 contains the igniter 5 and serves as the combustion space. Other shapes of combustion chambers are described applied to engines having various arrangements of valves.
