Abstract

366,008. Oil engines. WEBER, M. E., 79, Rue des Plantes, Paris. Oct. 16, 1930, No. 31016. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1929. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (iv).] In an engine in which intimate mixing of the fuel and combustion air is produced by whirling the air charge, an ignition device 11, Fig. 2, or 11c, Fig. 7, is located near the fuel injector 8 but in a position such that the fuel will reach it only after the air stream has carried the combustible around the combustion chamber, thereby ensuring adequate mixing before ignition occurs. The igniter may be carried by the cylinder head in the alternative positions shown at 11c or 11d, Fig. 7, on the piston, or on the cylinder wall, as shown in Fig. 2 ; it is preferably made from a catalytic or easily oxidizable metal such as copper, nickel, chromium aluminium, cerium or vanadium and is thermally insulated from the cylinder by a sleeve 12. The igniter may be heated electrically for starting. A ring of metal which is a good heat conductor may be fitted in the upper end of the cylinder, in contact with the cooled walls so that its temperature remains below that of spontaneous ignition. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the top surface of the piston may be made of either of the materials referred to above to act as an igniter. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
