Abstract

Titanium dioxide of high colouring power and capable of easy filtration is obtained from solutions of titanium sulphate by treating the solution before precipitation with a liquor possessing a nucleating action prepared either by hydrolysis of a solution of titanium sulphate in which orthotitanic acid has been dissolved but in which a pH value of 2 has not been exceeded, or by neutralizing a solution of titanium sulphate with alkali so that a pH value of 2 is not exceeded, redissolving the precipitated titanium in the mother liquor, and hydrolysing the clear solution. The liquor from which the nuclei are hydrolysed out may contain from 10-30 grms. of sulphuric acid and 30-60 grs. of titanium oxide per litre, and the ratio of titanium to sulphuric acid be from 2 : 1 to 5 : 1. The nuclei are precipitated at a temperature below 95 DEG C., and 1-6 per cent of nucleus liquor may be added to the main solution to be hydrolysed. Specification 310,949 [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], is referred to.
