Abstract
A water-in-oil emulsion, suitable for use as a vehicle for printing-ink, is prepared by incorporating water in a mineral oil, e.g. kerosene or light or heavy lubricating-oil, with wool grease as an emulsifying agent, the proportion by weight of oil to wool grease being ten or more to one. An auxiliary emulsifying-agent such as a water-soluble or water-in-soluble soap may be employed, the soap being formed, if desired, during the process of adding an alkali and a fatty acid. According to examples (a) a mixture of equal parts of crude wool grease and spindle oil is dissolved in lubricating-oil, water is stirred in, and carbon black and induline in oleic acid are added; (b) a small amount of calcium stearate may be added to the mixture of example (a) as an auxiliary emulsifying-agent; (c) crude wool grease and tall-oil (a source of oleic acid) are heated together and caustic potash added, further tall-oil being then added to form an emulsifying-agent which is mixed with kerosene, water, and pigments.
