Abstract

As table de-greasing liquid is obtained by saponifying tall oil with some excess of alkali solution, adding a grease solvent, and then mixing in a phenol in quantity sufficient at least to neutralize the excess of alkali. The tall oil may be replaced by an artificial mixture of 50-70 lb. of rosin acid with 40-20 lb. of fatty acid, e.g. oleic or the liquid fatty acids derived from fish, corn, or castor oils. The degreasing liquid is readily emulsified with water and washed from the surface treated. In an example, 100 lb. of tall oil containing about 50-70 lb. of rosin acids, 40-20 of fatty acids, and 10 of inert or unsaponifiable organic matter, is saponified at 20-30 DEG C. by spraying thereinto a concentrated aqueous solution of caustic potash, ammonia, amines, e.g. triethanolamine, or mixed potash and soda, in amount furnishing 1-5 per cent excess alkali, adding 25-75 lb. of pine oil, kerosene, light furnace oil, or a mixture thereof, and then admixing 15-30 per cent, relative to composition, of cresylic acid, carbolic acid, or a or b naphthol. The composition may be thinned with up to 8 vol. of solvent before use. Other solvents specified are chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. trichlor-ethylene, carbon tetrachloride, and o-di-chlorbenzene. The manufacture of the composition may proceed continuously in the apparatus described in Specification 291,502, [Class 81 (i)].
