Abstract

385,397. Finishing fabrics. EDGAR, F. A., 11, Conway Road, Carlton, and WIDDOWSON, S. G., Latimer Works, Bulwell, both in Nottingham. Nov. 10, 1931, No. 31181. [Class 42 (i).] Nap or pile, raising and dressing.-The napping rollers A, A<1> or the fabric feed rollers 4, 8 or both are arranged so that there is relative reciprocation between the fabric 1 and the rollers A, A<1>. As shown in Fig. 1, the upper and lower rollers A, A<1> which act on opposite faces of the fabric are mounted in the two frames 16 of a carriage which is horizontally reciprocated by a crank and connecting-rod 38 between guides 18, 19, the latter of which is carried by crank arms 32 which can be adjusted to alter the distance apart of the two frames 16 and consequently the amount of deflection of the fabric by the rollers A, A<1>. The alternate rollers of each series A, A<1> are driven by belts or chains 34 and sprocket wheels 63, Fig. 19, faster than the fabric 1 is fed by the rollers 4, 8 and the sprocket wheel 65, while the remainder or counter napping rollers of each series A, A<1> are driven slower than the fabric bv other chains and the sprocket wheels 64. The teeth on the'two sets of napping rollers are bent in opposite directions. To ensure that the rollers A, A<1> are always driven at the proper relative higher and lower speeds, the sprockets 63, 64 are connected by gearing P, R and Q, S with the sun wheels 60, 61 of a differential gear, the planet wheel carrier 58 of which is connected by gearing O, N with the sprocket 65. The sun wheel 60 is further connected through gearing M, L and shaft 52 with the planet wheel carrier 56 of a second differential gear, one sun wheel 55 of which is connected through gearing J4, K with the planet wheel carrier 58. The sun wheels 55, 53 are connected with sets of wheels J .. J<4> and H .. H2 which gear with separate wheels G .. G4 and F .. F<2>, any one of each set of which can be locked to its drive shaft 47 by an adjustable key 49. Fig. 17 shows a machine in which both the napping rollers and the fabric are reciprocated in opposite directions, while Fig. 18 shows a machine in which only the fabric is reciprocated.
