Abstract

1,124,875. Laminates. SOC. DE CONSTRUCTION DE RECHERCHE D'APPLICATION SOCORAP. 20 Feb., 1967 [21 Feb., 1966], No. 7932/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A warp 4 of natural or synthetic textile yarns is corrugated, e.g. in the manufacture of a carpet, by successively pushing parts of the warp 4 between blades 18 on a cylinder 5 by folding rollers 20 each of which is moved, between adjacent blades 18, across the warp 4 from one longitudinal edge thereof to the other longitudinal edge. In the machine shown, the warp 4 is guided by rollers 6, 7 and a bar 8 and when formed with corrugations 2 is bonded to a backing 3 which carries an adhesive layer thereon. The cylinder 5 is mounted on a shaft 9 driven from a main shaft 11 by bevel gears 13, 14, a shaft 15, a wormscrew 16 and a toothed wheel 17. The blades 18 are parallel to the horizontal axis of the shaft 9 and the inner faces thereof are rough to assist in retaining the corrugations 2. The folding rollers 20 are each freely rotatable on a pivot 21 secured to a movable support 22 attached to the machine frame 31. The path of the rollers 20 includes an essentially horizontal portion which is slightly oblique to the axis of the shaft 9 and is followed by a rising portion and a returning descending portion. Each roller 20 is provided with a folding ring 33, Fig. 4, which moves at a given distance from the cylindrical face of the cylinder 5. Retaining rings 34, 35 of the same external diameter as the ring 33 are also provided on the roller 20 to control the bottom of the formed corrugations 2. The rings 33, 34, 35 have entirely circular peripheries but, in a modification to obtain corrugations of varying height across the width of the warp 4, are only circular on parts of their peripheries and comprise flat portions or arcuate segments on the remaining parts. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), to form a cut pile carpet of even height, the ring 35 is replaced by a knife (36) having an outer diameter greater than that of the rings (33) (34). In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), to obtain a textured carpet with upper and lower looped pile, in each group of three folds, one fold is higher than the remaining two folds. In another modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), to obtain a textured cut pile, a folding ring and a retaining ring of different heights and a knife to out the shallow folds only are provided.
