382,649. Uniting and folding paper sheets. DIXON, H. E., 26, Holborn Viaduct, London. July 28, 1931, No. 21522. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] Paper sheets or signatures are united, either'by adhesive applied to overlapping edges or by a gummed strip, and folded along the connecting line, in a single machine. Two sheets a, b, Fig. 2, are registered with the required overlap against adjustable side-gauges d, e, on a table c, Fig. 1, and pusher-members f feed them between endless bands g where adhesive or a gummed strip is applied and the sheets pressed together. Endless bands convey the united sheets to tapes q moving over a folding table or to a conveyer moving at right-angles to the bands k which carry the sheets to a buckling- folder. In the former case, a reciprocating device o registers the sheets laterally and a knife m folds the sheets which are received in a tray p<1>. The registering device o, folding mechanism, and delivery rollers p are thrown into operation by the action of the sheets on a feeler mechanism constructed as described in Specification 339,993, [Class 100 (i), Feeding and delivering webs &c.], or by mechanism shown in Figs. 5 and 7, wherein a pivoted feeler r has a catch t normally holding a lever s in a position against spring action so that a finger 4 on a link w connected therewith engages and holds inoperative a spring-pressed pin 5 which, when released, couples together the two halves y, z of a clutch on a continuouslyrotating shaft x. When a sheet engages the detector r, the release of the pin 5 is effected and causes a cam u fixed to the clutch part z to be given one revolution so as to operate, through a link 7, the folding &c. mechanisms.
