Abstract
363,310. Feeding and delivering sheets in paperfolding machines. CAMCO (MACHINERY), Ltd., 63, Farringdon Street, London. Sept. 11, 1930, No. 27164. Convention date, Jan. 23. [Class 100 (i).] In a paper-folding machine having a feed-table which conveys sheets delivered from one set of folding units at rightangles to their previous path into a set of perpendicular folding units, the feed-table is constructed and provided with devices so that it can be converted in situ into a delivery stacker when the second set of units is not in use. The sheets are fed into the first set of buckling- folder units 30, Fig. 3, by bands 16 which are supported by a rigid plate 11 and inclined towards a side-guide 17 carrying balls 18 which press the sheets lightly on to the first band 16. In order to prevent the outside leading corner of a sheet from engaging beneath the outside band 16 an inclined deflector plate 25, adjustably mounted on a crossrod 22, is provided and is caused to engage with a groove 26 in the plate 11 adjacent to the band 16 corresponding to the width of the sheet so that the corner of the sheet rides up the plate on to the band 16. After leaving the folders 30 the sheets are fed to the intermediate feed-table comprising. bands 45, 46 passing over a rigid plate 39 and moving the front edge of the sheet against a guide 56 adjustably secured to the plate 39. In order to feed the sheet at right-angles to its previous path into a set of cross folders 72, a bracket 53 fixed to the undersurface of the plate 39 carries inclined bevelled rollers 62 which project through openings 64 in the plate, and balls 67 carried by the guide 56 press the sheet lightly against the rollers. If, however, it is not desired to cross-fold the sheet, the guide 56 is removed and the bands 45, 46 driven at a reduced speed so as to act as a delivery stacker. A detachable pan 69 is provided to receive the sheets from the bands 45, 46 when so used, and is secured in position by means of two rods 70. From the folders 72 the sheets mav be delivered on to a second combined feed or stacker table similar to 39 or to any other desired paper-handling apparatus. The machine is driven from a belt pulley 83 on the shaft of one of the folding rollers 30. This shaft is coupled by a gear train 86 .. 90 to the folders 72 and drives, through gears 93, 94, a shaft 95 arranged parallel and adjacent to the shaft 43 of the tape roller 44. A clutch member 111, Fig. 4, is slidably keyed to the shaft 43 and has gear teeth 113<1> thereon which, in one position of the member 111, engage a gear wheel 96 on the shaft 95 so that the bands 45, 46 are driven at their normal speed. On an extension of tne shaft 43 outside the main frame 10 is a freely-mounted ratchet wheel 110, Fig. 5, and also a freely-mounted sleeve 102 having arms 103, 104, the former of which carries a spring- pressed pawl 106 engaging the wheel 110, and the latter being pivoted to an arm 108 having a strap 109 riding on an eccentric 97 on the shaft 95 so as to oscillate the pawl 106 and rotate the wheel 110. The wheel 110 is also formed as a clutch member similarly to the member 111, the latter being moved into engagement with the wheel 110 when it is desired to drive the bands 45, 46 at reduced speed for stacking. A spring-pressed ball 116 in the member 111 engages grooves 114, 115 in the shaft 43 to hold the member 111 in either of its alternative positions. Specifications 281,599, 331,588, [both in Class 100 (i), Feeding and delivering webs &c.], and 362,496 are referred to.
