Abstract

329,161. Shaw, A. V., and Shaw, W. E. May 13, 1929. Folding paper.-In a machine for folding paper or like sheets, a roller is provided to direct sheets into one or other of two alternative paths according to its direction of rotation. In an arrangement of buckling folders g, m and associated rollers, Fig. 1, for imparting parallel folds to a sheet, the roller d associated with the rollers d', d<2> of the buckling-plate g and the roller i associated with the rollers i<1>, i<2> of the buckling-plate m are arranged to be driven in either direction, and to drive the associated rollers frictionally so as to direct the sheet either into the buckling- plates or between the rollers d or i and co-operating rolls d<3> or i<3>. A fixed member h guides the sheet on to the roller i<1> after it leaves the roller d. The rollers d, i have gear-wheels u, p<3>, Fig. 2, respectively thereon. The gear-wheel p' meshes, according to the required direction, with either of two intermeshing gear-wheels p<1> p<2>, the former of which is driven from a gear-wheel p on a. main shaft o. Brackets r pivoted on the shaft o are held in position with either of the gearwheels p<1>, p<2> engaging the gear-wheel p<3> by means of a spring-pressed plunger v engaging holes w in the fixed framing. Brackets s pivoted on the shaft of the gear-wheel p<3> carry gear-wheels t, t<1> which, according to the position of the brackets, can drive the gear-wheel u in either directior.. After leaving the. roller i, the sheets pass through rollers n, n<1> which may slit or perforate the sheets, and are forwarded on to a table 1, Fig. 3, through which a knife 2 folds the sheet transversely into rolls 3, 4. From the rolls 3, 4 the sheet passes to a roll 5 which can be rotated in other direction to direct the sheet either into a buckling-folder 9 or between the roller 5 and a roller 6. Beyond the rollers 5, 6 is a reversible roller 11, so that a sheet passing therethrough may be forwarded either to a blade folder 12, 13 or to a stacker-delivery 16. If the sheet is folded by the folder 9 it may afterwards be fed into the folder 12, 13 or to the delivery 16 according to. the direction of rotation of the roller 11. The sheets from the folder 12, 13 pass into a container 14. The rollers 5, 11 are driven from the shaft of the roller 3 by gearing similar to that shown in Fig. 2. Either of the. blades 2. 13 may be kept, raised out of operative position so that the sheets arriving on the corresponding tables 1, 12 respectively may be delivered without further folding.
