HENRY F. BECHMAN, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DUPLEX PRINTING PRESS COMPANY, OF BATTLE CREEK,
MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
Femme-mounten Fon WEB-PRINTING PRESSES.
No. eoaaoe.
Specification of Letters Patent.
:Patented Dec. e, r190e.
' Application mea may 2, I1901. serial No. 371,491.
To all whom t't-may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY of Battle Creek, inthe county of .Calhoun and State of- Michigan, have invented certain new and useful IImprovements in Folding Mechanisms for Web-Printing Presses; and I hereby declare that the followin is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention 1Sl an improvement in folding mechanisms for newspaper web-printing presses, and its object is to provide means whereby sheets may be directed either from the second-fold rolls to the stacker to be delivered folded half-size, or may be passed on to the third-fold rolls and be deliveredv folded one-fourth size; and for this purpose I provide a series of tapes which may be adjusted into different positions, so as tov either direct the papers from the secondfold rolls to the' third-fold rolls; or permit them to pass direct from the second-fold rolls to the stacker.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement of such tapes and means for adjusting them as will be fully understoodfrom the following description in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatical sectional elevation of the folding mechanism of a web-printing press; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1 partly broken awa Thefolding mechanism is provide as usual, with first-fold rolls 1, 1a (located at the apex of the former F over which the web is led from the press to the first-fold rolls,)-
by which the web -is folded longitudinally upon itself before it is severed. It is then passed between the cutting cylinder 2 and the folding cylinder 2a, which may be 'provided with tuckers, indicated at T, constructed as usual so that if desired two or more sheets may be collected upon cylinder 2a before they'v are passed into the secondfold rolls 3, 3a. After lthe desired number` of sheets have been severed and collected upon cylinder 2, they are discharged from said cylinder, -by the'well known means and in the well known manner, between the second-fold rolls 3, 3, by which the severed sheets are folded transversely upon themselves to half-size papers.
At one side of the second-fold rolls are third-fold rolls 8, which usually are yar- F BECHMAN,
i which the one halffold papers can readily change the folder ranged at right angles to rolls 3, 3*?, andthe papers may be directed from the second-fold rolls to the third-fold rolls by the following means: j
The roll 3 is provided with tape-channels at intervals in its face, in which channels are guided tapes 6 which, as shown-in full lines in Fig. 1, run between rolls 3, 3, to and over pulleys 5 on stub shafts 5c affixed to arms 5d mounted on-a fixedv shaft 5e. The tapes 6 pass from pulleys 5 to and over adjustable pulleys 6a mounted on stub shafts 6b attached to brackets 6c adj ustably mounted on rods 6e attached to a fixed shaft 6. The brackets 6c are adjustable on rod 6e and .may be fixed in position thereon by bolts 6d von brackets 6.
On stub shaft 5 beside pulleys 5a, are pulleys 5 over which run tapes 7 which are adapted to convey the paper to and over the third-fold rolls 8 and under tucker blade 8, which is arranged to be operated in the usual manner so as to pass the papers between the third-fold rolls whereby they are folded to one-quarter size. When the tapes 6 are in theA position describediand shown in full lines Fig. 1, the sheets will be directed by said tapes 6 onto tapes 7 and carried by the latter to and over third-fold rolls 8.
If the tapes 6 are adjusted to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the papers can pass from the second-fold rolls 3, 3a, in front of upright fingers 4 behind which is located a shaft 4b carrying rotary flies 4 by be stacked in the usual manner.
' If it is not desired to have the papers folded to one-quarter-size, the tapes 6 are slipped off of pulleys 5a and the pulleys 6a are moved back lo n rods 6e to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, and when tapes 6. are in such position'the papers will drop from the `second-fold rolls 3, 3a, in front of thefrotary ily 4a. By means of these tapes 6 ltherefore the operator can to produce papers folded either to half-size or quarter-size, and when running quarter-size-fold papers there is nochance for the papers to become fouled with the rotary fly, or the fingers 4 as the tapes 6 carry the papers positively around and under roll 3a to the tapes 7, and the papers do not have to jump any spaces between tapes or rollers in 'order to reach the third-fold rolls.
Having described my invention what I llO ing device; adjustab e claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a folding mechanism, the combination of a-pair of folding rolls, means for directing papers/thereto; a second pair vof folding rolls at right angles to the first fold rolls, and means for carrying papers thereto; with tapes extending between the rst pair of folding rolls, and'nieans whereby said tapes can be adjusted either to direct the papers from the first pair 'of folding rolls to the second pair of folding rolls, or to permit the papers to be discharged away from the rst pair of folding rolls.
2. In a folding mechanism, the combination of cutting and collecting cylinders, a pair of folding-rolls adjacent thereto, a second folding device adjacent the folding rolls, a stacker beneath the folding rolls, and an adjustable set of tapes extending between` the folding rolls, andl adapted when in one position to permit the papers to pass direct to the stacker; and in the other position to direct the papers onto the second folding devices.
3. In a folding mechanism, the combination of cutting and collecting cylinders, a ,pair of folding rolls adjacent thereto, a second set offolding rolls adjacent the first folding rolls; a rotary fly vbeneath the first folding rolls, and an adjustable set of tapes extending between the first pair of folding rolls, andadapted in one position to permit lthe papers to pass direct to the rotary fly;
and 1n t-he other position to direct the papers onto the second set of folding rolls.
4:. -The combination with a pair of foldin rolls, a second folding device adjacent sai rolls, a stacking device below said rolls, tapes for carrying pa ers to the second foldtapes extending between the folding rolls, relatively stationary pulleys for said tapes below the folding rolls, and adjustable pulleys for said tapes at one side of such rolls, whereby said tapes can be adjusted to permit papers to pass direct to the stacking device or on to the second folding device.
5. The combination in a folding mechanism, of a former, a pair of first-fold rolls at its apex, cutting cylinders adjacent said first-fold rolls; a pair of second-fold rolls; a set of third-fold rolls adjacent the secondfold rolls, and a` stacker below the secondfold rolls; with an adjustable set of tapes extending between the second-fold rolls, and i fixed and adjustable guide pulleys for said tapes, whereby said tapes can be adjusted either to direct papers from the second-fold rolls to the third-fold rolls, or to permit the papers to pass direct from the second-fold rolls to the stacker.
6. The combination in a folding mechanism, of a former, a pair of folding rolls at its apex, cutting and collecting cylinders adjacent said folding rolls; a pair of secondfold'rolls, adjacent the collecting cylinder; a set of third-fold rolls adjacent the secondfold rolls, and a rotary fly stacker below the second-foldrolls; with an adjustable set of tapes extending between the secondfold rolls, and fixed and adjustable guide pulleys for said tapes, whereby said tapes can be adjusted either to direct papers from the second-fold rolls to lthe third-fold rolls, or direct from the second-fold rolls to the rotary fly stacker, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
