To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM SPALCKHAVER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery Mechanisms for Printing-Machines, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in printing-machines. Thereisatthepresent timeadenlandamong users of printing machinery for a machine which will produce a product consisting of a number of stapled sheets foldedinside a number of other sheets. This is particularly true of the publishers of newspapers, many of whom desire to issue on certain days a magazine which will form a part of the ordinary paper and which shall be folded inside of the sheets which comprise the ordinary paper. Since, however, this magazine is only issued occasionally, it is not desirable to install special machinery which can' only be used for the production of this particular product.
This invention has for its object to produce adelivery mechanism for printing-machines which is capacitated to deliver a'plurality of stapled sheets folded inside of other sheets and which is also capacitated to deliver independent products.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions and in certain parts, improvements, and coinloinations, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims hereto appended. r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates one form of a delivery vmechanism embodying'the invention. Fig. 24sa per spective View of one of the \products which this delivery mechanism is capacitated to produce. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of delivery mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 illustrate a pair of cutting and folding cylinders of ordinary construction. The web or webs 50 upon which these cylinders operate may be presented to them in any desired way. As
cooperates with the second delivery mechanshown, the web is delivered to these cylinders by a pair of rolls 3, which may be the nippingrolls of an ordinary longitudinal folder, the drawing-off rolls 4 of such folder being shown as located above the nippingrolls.. The sheets produced by the cuttingcylinders l and 2 are tucked, by the usual folding-blades 5, between the pair of foldingrolls 6, which rolls deliver the folded sheets to an S-fly 7. of ordinary construction, said fly in turn delivering the sheets to a carrier 8. The agencies which have been above referred to are all well known in the art, and for the purposes of the present invention it is sufficient to indicate them diagrammatically, these agencies having no special reference to the present invention and the devices by which they are operated being well known and being unnecessary to an understanding of the invention.
A second pair of cutting-cylinders (marked 9 and 10) is employed, to which a web is shown as being delivered by means of rolls 11, which, as said in connection with the description of the first delivery mechanism, may be the nipping-rolls of an ordinary longitudinal folder, the drawing-off rolls of this folder being indicated at 12. The cylinder 9 is provided with the usual tucking-blades 13, which deliver the cut sheets to a pair of folding-rollers 14, these rollers in turn delivering the sheets to an S- fiy 15, which deposits the sheets on a carrier 16. A diagrammatic illustration of this second delivery mechanism is sufficient for the purposes of the present specification for the reasons stated in connection with the description of the first delivery mechanism.
A stapling mechanism is employed, which ism. This stapling mechanism may be of any ofthe forms now wellknownin the art. .Preferably, however, the staple forming and driving roll will be arranged to cooperate directly with the cylinder 9, before referred to, said staplingroll being diagrammatically illustrated at 17 It is apparent that with the construction as so far described a cut and folded product may be delivered by the fly 7 to the carrier 8, and a cut, stapled, and folded product may be delivered to the carrier 16 by the fly 15, or by throwing out the stapling-rolls, which can be accomplished by any of the ordinary agencies, a cut and folded product may be delivered by the flies to the carriers 8 and 16.
When it is desired to employ the mechanism before described to produce a single product consisting of a plurality of stapled sheets folded inside the other sheets, suitable guides are provided. These guides may be varied somewhat in position, depending upon the specific arrangement of the various mechanisms and the way in which it is desired to run the web. Referring to the construction shown in Fig. l, the stapled web is led directly from the stapling mechanism around aguide 18 and then over a guide 19 to and between the cutting-cylinders 1 and 2. As the stapled web passes around the cylinder 1. it meets the other web and is associated therewith, the two webs being cut simultaneously, after which they are tucked between the rolls 6, which deliver the folded product to the fly 7. With this arrangement the cutting-cylinders 9 and 10 are rendered inoperativeas, for instance, by removing the cutting-bar from the cylinder 10 or in any other suitable manner. The mechanism for operating the rolls 14 and the fly 15 may also be thrown out, if desired.
Referring to the construction shown in Fig. 3, in which the unstapled web is led to the stapling-delivery, the guides 18 and 19 are employed, as before, and an additional guide 20 is or may be used. In this construction, furthermore, the cutting-cylinder 10 and the stapling-roll 17 are transposed in position. This arrangement, however, produces, as before, a product consisting of stapled sheets folded inside other sheets.
The invention may be embodied in constructions and arrangements different from those which have been hereinbefore described. The invention is not, therefore, to be limited to the specific constructions and arrangements of parts described in the foregoing specification and illustratedin the accompanying drawings.
What is claimed is-- 1. The combination withacutting and folding mechanism, of means for presentinga web thereto, a delivery mechanism to which said cutting and folding mechanism delivers sheets, a second cutting mechanism, means for presentinga web thereto, a stapling mechanism cooperating therewith, adelivery mechanism to which said second cutting mechanism delivers sheets, said cutting and delivery mechanisms being capacitated for independent use, and guides whereby both webs may be led to one of the cutting mechanisms with the stapled web on the inside, substantially as described.
2. The combination with acutting and folding mechanism, of means for presentinga web thereto, a delivery mechanism'to which said cutting mechanism delivers sheets, a second cutting mechanism comprising a pair of cutting and folding rolls and a pairof nippingrolls, a stapling-roll cooperating with one of the cutting-rolls, a delivery mechanism to which said second cutting. mechanism delivers, said cutting and delivery mechanism being capacitated for independent use, and guides whereby both webs may be led to one of the mechanisms with the stapled web on the inside, substantially as described.
