Abstract

Ammonium sulphate is obtained by oxidizing ammonium sulphite, thiosulphate or polythionates solely and directly with concentrated or dilute liquid nitric acid. The oxidation may be accelerated by means of catalysts such as vanadic acid. The nitric oxide formed may be oxidized to nitrogen peroxide or to nitric acid which may be returned to the process. The ammonium sulphite may be employed in the solid state or in aqueous solution.
