Abstract

380,499. Valve amplifying circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, and ROUND, H. J., Westfield, Muswell Hill, both in London. June 17,1931, No. 17614. [Class 40 (v).] The gain of a thermionic amplifier comprising a pentode valve is regulated by a control resistance in t h e screen-grid circuit, consisting wholly or in part of a photoelectric device activated by a controllable light source As shown in the Figure applied to an amplifier circuit similar to that described in Specification 378,950, a selenium cell S is connected in series with a resistance R3 across a supply battery B1. The junction of the cell S and the resistance R3 is connected to the screen-grid of the valve V1, so that the voltage on this grid, which determines the gain, is varied by varying the illumination of the cell S. For this purpose, a lamp EL may be used, and its brightness varied by a rheostat. When the amplifier is used for sound film reproduction, a volume-controlling record film may be traversed between the lamp EL and the cell S.
