Abstract

378,059. Protective arrangements. BADER, J., 21, Ceresstrasse, Z³rich, Switzer. land. April 2, 1931, No. 10092. [Class 38 (iv).] Relates to a protective arrangement, (e.g. lightning arrester), in which delay in the discharge between two electrodes 8, 11 of a spark gap is reduced by ionization of the gap by means of an auxiliary electrode, and consists in mounting this auxiliary electrode which has a ring of points 13 or may be a sharp edged disc concentrically with and above the electrode 11. The electrodes 8, 11 are mounted in a glass or quartz vessel 1 filled with air or gas and containing absorbent material to take up products of discharge. The upper electrode 11 can be adjusted and is connected through a resistance 6 to the line 7 to be protected. The Specification states that since the auxiliary electrode 13 is connected to the main 7 sufficient discharge will occur from it to maintain the gap sufficiently ionized to present small resistance to abnormally high potentials but insufficiently to allow appreciable leakage of line current.
