Abstract
791,743. Cold-cathode tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 23, 1955 [Dec. 23, 1954; Dec. 23, 1954; Dec. 23, 1954], No. 36939/55. Class 39(1). A cold cathode gas or vapour filled relay tube has a main discharge path between an anode 2 and a cathode 1 and a starting electrode 4 automatically biassed by the voltage drop along an auxiliary discharge path between electrode 4 and an auxiliary cathode 3. The anode of the auxiliary discharge path may be a separate electrode connected with the starting electrode 4. The main discharge may be triggered by raising the potential of either electrode 3, 4, the electrode 4 being connected to an external voltage source through a resistance 7 the value of which is such that the voltage drop along the auxiliary path is constant. The breakdown voltage of the starting discharge path (4-1) is only a few volts higher than the maintaining voltage of the auxiliary discharge path (3-4). As shown the main cathode 1 is arranged to effect partial separation of the main and auxiliary discharges, coupling being facilitated by an aperture in the plate 1. Preferably the shortest distance between the auxiliary anode 4 and the main cathode 1 is greater than that between the auxiliary anode 4 and the auxiliary cathode 3 and the potential of the cathode 1 is higher than that of the cathode 3. A common cathode may be utilized.
